Some parents may consider a live-in nanny to help with the juggling act of managing work and family. These days many families don't have extended family to call on for a helping hand. Life with children can be incredibly busy and tiring. So a live-in nanny is a great option for those who have the space in their home for a carer.

For Parents

A live-in nanny is usually a full-time job, with similar hours from one week to the next.

A live-in nanny is different to an au pair, who has travelled internationally and is in America for a cultural exchange.

The live-in nanny will require separate accommodation. Ideally this is a room in another part of the house with her own kitchenette and bathroom.

What can a live-in nanny do?

A live-in nanny will mostly likely work full-time hours. So her role will cover a range of tasks. Her job will be mostly focused on childcare, but may also include some household or housekeeping duties.

Light housekeeping tasks may include child-related cooking, cleaning and washing.

The live-in nanny may also be involved in organising activities such as play dates with other children or swimming or music lessons.

A nanny's duties may change from family to family. What they are required to do depends on the ages of the children and how much experience the carer has.

What can't a live-in nanny do?

It is up to the parents and nanny to agree on the role and duties. In most cases the live-in nanny will not be responsible for bigger cleaning tasks (that a house cleaner would do).

The main focus is on childcare and helping keep things running smoothly. This may change from day to day or week to week.

You will need to agree on working hours to ensure there is a start and end time to the nanny's shifts. A live-in nanny doesn't necessarily work 24/7. She's most likely to work daytime hours by agreement.

What's the difference between an au pair and a live-in nanny?

An au pair travels from overseas to spend time in America working and living. The purpose of her trip is usually a cultural exchange.

A live-in nanny will mostly likely be a permanent resident of America and is simply looking for a living and working arrangement.

Will a live-in nanny do housework?

The family and the nanny need to discuss and agree on the exact tasks that will be part of her job.

Generally most nannies are responsible for light household duties such as tidying toys, meal preparation, cleaning benches, children's washing and folding.

If the parents would like more significant cleaning tasks they should discuss this and ensure there is enough time allocated for this.

How much do I pay a live-in nanny?

A live-in nanny is usually paid per hour, for the hours she works. Then 'room and board' is deducted from this.

The hourly rate for a live-in nanny depends on her age and experience, the role (the number and ages of the children) and the location.

Most qualified, experienced nannies earn over $25 per hour.

Parents will need to consider hours per week, annual leave and sick pay too.

What do I look for?

The most important characteristics are trust, honesty, reliability, skills and experience. You'll be able to judge this from an interview and also from references.

You will also want to ensure that they are the right personality match for your children and family, particularly given the amount of time they'll spend in your home.

Qualifications are not essential, but may be helpful.

You may want to consider paying for her to complete a First Aid course if this is something that is important to you.
